Wall Street and European markets rallied overnight after the number of jobless claims in the US fell to the lowest level since April 2008, in a further sign the world's largest economy is returning to health.
The numbers show "a visible downtrend which suggests the US labour market may be in better shape than commonly assumed.
Markets also got a boost from news that US consumer confidence beat expectations to reach a six-month high, as data indicated that the country's economy should have grown by more than three per cent in the last quarter of the year. http://www.goldennifty.com
At 1030 AEDT on Friday the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 42.4 points, or one per cent, at 4,132.6, while the broader All Ordinaries index had gained 41.6 points, also one per cent, to 4,183.8.
On the ASX 24, the March 2012 share price index futures contract was up 37 points at 4,120, with 6,021 contracts traded.
Friday's session on the ASX will close at 1430 AEDT, with the market next opening on December 28.
Financials were the strongest performers, adding 1.3 per cent in the wake of a strong push higher by their global peers. http://www.goldennifty.com
